Desert Botanical Garden
It is located at the northern end of the sprawling Papago Park, and it is a magnificent botanical garden that contains desert species from all over the world. One-third of the 4,000 taxa represented at the Desert Botanical Garden are indigenous to the Sonoran Desert, which encompasses the area around Phoenix. There are a total of 50,000 plants, which includes large collections of cactuses and agave plants. In addition to species that grow in more moderate conditions, shade houses are used to house plants from Australia, South America, and California that grow in desert conditions.
When you come to the park, you can walk a series of themed trails that showcase brilliant desert wildflowers, delve into the topic of conservation, and reveal information about the native plants and people of the Sonoran Desert. Entrance is free. Arrive late in the day to see the flowers that bloom after dark, and when the cactuses are also illuminated for a more dramatic effect. During the months of March and May, a butterfly exhibit is housed in a special pavilion where you can learn about the butterfly’s lifecycle.
Visit the Heard Museum
A must-see for anyone interested in learning more about the many indigenous tribes that call Arizona home, the Heard Museum is one of the country’s top museums for American Indian art and one of the best places to learn about them. It was founded in 1929 by the collector and philanthropist Maie Bartlett Heard and her husband Dwight, who had acquired Phoenix’s La Ciudad Indian Ruin a few years before, which had yielded many of the pieces in their collection. The Heards lived in Phoenix at the time of the purchase. The Heard Museum is renowned for its award-winning exhibits, both permanent and temporary, which have been featured in numerous publications.
